Thinking About the Idea of What’s ‘Normal’ for a Home Loan
Most weeks as a mortgage broker in Palm Beach, I chat with people who, for one reason or another, feel like they're a bit out of step when it comes to their home loan. They've often got this idea in their head of what
It's a funny thing, this idea of
When we talk about
This kind of thinking can pop up whether you're just starting out, thinking about your first home, or if you've owned a few properties over the years. It doesn't matter where you are in the journey, that little voice can whisper that maybe you're not doing it
Sometimes, this feeling comes from comparing yourself to others. You see a friend who bought their place five years earlier than you, or a family member who seems to have a magically low interest rate, or someone else who's just paid off their loan completely. It's human nature to look at what others have or what they've achieved and measure ourselves against it. But the truth is, you only ever see the highlight reel, not the behind-the-scenes struggles or the entirely different circumstances that led them to that point. Everyone's journey is their own, and that's especially true with something as big and personal as a home loan.
The financial world itself doesn't always help either. There's a constant stream of news and information, often focusing on broad trends or what the
Then there's the sheer volume of information out there. Interest rates, loan types, repayment strategies, market forecasts, property prices in different suburbs , it can feel overwhelming. And when you're overwhelmed, it's easy to second-guess yourself, or to think that because you don't understand every single detail, you're somehow not doing things
What's important to remember is that there's no universal
A home loan is a really big financial commitment, probably the biggest most of us will ever make. It touches on so many aspects of our lives , our income, our family plans, our career, our lifestyle, even our hopes and dreams for the future. It's not a one-size-fits-all product, and nor should it be. What works for your mate who's a tradie with a young family might not be right for your neighbour who's an empty-nester running their own business.
Think about it from your own perspective. What are your immediate financial goals? What about five years from now, or ten? Are you planning a family? Do you want to travel? Is your job stable, or are you thinking about a career change? These are all real-life factors that should influence how your home loan is structured and managed. What makes sense for someone else with a different set of life circumstances could be completely unsuitable for you.
For example, some people might prioritise the absolute lowest interest rate at all costs, even if it means less flexibility or higher fees in the long run. For others, having the option to make extra repayments without penalty, or being able to redraw funds if an emergency pops up, might be far more valuable. Neither approach is inherently

It's also worth considering that the lending environment changes. What was
The market itself also plays a role. Property prices go up and down, interest rates fluctuate, and lending policies evolve. What seemed like a smart move a few years ago might look different today, and vice versa. There's no crystal ball, and everyone is making decisions based on the information and circumstances they have at the time. To beat yourself up because you didn't predict the future or because the market shifted unexpectedly isn't really fair to yourself.
Ultimately, feeling
One of the best things you can do to shake off that feeling of not being

So, if you've been feeling like you're somehow missing the memo on what's
It's about finding the right fit for you, your finances, and your future. It's about understanding your options and making informed decisions that you feel good about. And sometimes, just talking through your situation with someone who understands the ins and outs of home loans can make all the difference, helping you realise that what you're doing is actually pretty
Because when it comes down to it, your home loan journey is uniquely yours. There's no one else in your shoes, and there's no single path that everyone has to follow. The goal isn't to be
It's about getting clear on your situation, your goals, and then making choices that align with them. And if things feel a bit tangled or you're just looking for some straightforward answers, that's exactly the kind of chat a good mortgage broker is there for , to help you make sense of it all and build a plan that works for your version of
What feels
It's about understanding your own story, making informed choices, and feeling confident in the path you've chosen for yourself. And that, in my books, is a pretty sensible way to approach your home loan journey.
